The Five Solas: An Affirmation of Faith

The year 2017 is the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. We encourage you to use that occasion for your people to affirm their belief in five foundational truths of the Christian faith, often called “the five solas”. These five convictions drove the reformers to act boldly to restore the Church to a biblical Christian faith.

“Sola” is the Latin word for “alone” or “only”. It is used in five phrases that express basic theological principles of the Christian faith:
  • Sola Scriptura, or by Scripture alone
  • Sola Fide, or through faith alone
  • Sola Gratia, or by grace alone
  • Solus Christus, or by Christ alone
  • Soli Deo Gloria, or for the glory of God alone
The Five Solas: An Affirmation of Faith is provided free to facilitate such an occasion. It is a worship service for reader and congregation. Feel free to adapt it to your own situation. For example, you might substitute a second reader for congregation on some or all of the sections.

Present the service on a single occasion, or use the five individual sections on five successive Sundays, with each accompanied by a sermon on the topic.

All the hymns are set to familiar hymn tunes, so learning should be unnecessary. For additional hymn options, click here.

Also available as a free download is The Five Solas Devotional Companion.
